Lot 164

1798 S-158 R4 Style I Hair, Small 8 PCGS graded AU55. Frosty medium brown with steel brown toning on the highpoints. The surfaces are smooth and the eye appeal is excellent. The only marks are a few tiny ticks near the dentils right of the Y in LIBERTY, a small planchet chip (as struck) near the dentils right of the neck, a dull nick close under the E in STATES, and a speck of carbon at the top of the first A in AMERICA. MDS, Breen state IV. There are three vertical die cracks in the field behind the portrait but no cud breaks on the reverse. The area at ED-STA is weakly struck due to the opposing vertical cracks on the obverse but everything else is nicely impressed. Called EF45 and tied for CC#3 honors in the Bland/Breen census. Noyes says EF45 net VF35 and tied for CC#5, his photo #21849. Our grade is EF40+, close to EF45 (and the obverse looks very close to mint state). The reverse is plated in Dr. Sheldon's Early American Cents. Any way you look at it this is a very important cent, and it comes with an equally important provenance. The attribution and Naftzger-Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 2; 2 finer at PCGS for the variety, 1 in 58, 1 in 63. Estimate Value $5,000 - UP
