Lot 119

1840 N-2 R2 Small 18 over Large 18 PCGS graded MS65+ Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Beautiful lustrous mint red fading to light steel brown and olive with at least two-thirds of the red remaining on the obverse, 15% on the reverse. A choice cent, nearly flawless. The best identifying marks, and they are not at all distracting, are a tiny planchet flake hidden in the dentils right of star 13 (as struck), a thin nearly horizontal nick over the N in CENT, and another tiny one under that N. MDS, die state b. The Small 18 Over Large 18 feature is strong and a narrow but clearly defined rim cud shows under the 840. A wonderful example of this popular "Redbook" variety. Our grade is MS64, tied for CC#2 in the Grellman census. The attribution and Koshkarian provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; tied for finest graded at both services. Estimate Value $5,000 - UP
Ex American Numismatic Rarities Frog Run Farm Collection 11/2004:164 (earlier from a 1920 Thomas L. Elder auction, lot 737, according to Del Bland).

Realized $14,688
