Paul Haney "Voice of NASA" Personal Scrapbooks with Astronaut Autographs Including Armstrong. Paul Haney (1929-2009) best known as the voice of NASA's mission control for his live commentary during the Gemini and Apollo space flights in the 1960s. From his personal collection, a three volume set of scrapbooks, each with green covers marked "Public Affairs Office / Manned Spacecraft Center / NASA / Vol. I / II / III", is a history of Paul Haney's work as the "Voice of NASA" this collection focused primarily on the Gemini missions. Included are about 75/100 NASA 8 x 10" color /black and white publicity photos (mostly candid and mostly attached to the scrapbook pages), astronaut autographs (written on the scrapbook pages themselves), press clippings, telegrams, fan mail, letters of congratulations (from a variety of colleagues including Walter Cronkite, David Brinkley, Jules Bergman, Charles von Freund, even Bob Hope and Jose Ferrer.) and much, much more. As is the nature of scrapbooks of this age, the condition leaves a lot to be desired, but there is a lot to be appreciated - such as cartoon strip from Milton Caniff/"Steve Canyon", Group Achievements and other Awards, etc. Included are astronaut (some possibly autopen autographs) from John Young (GT-3), James McDivitt (blue ink, GT-4), Gordon Cooper, Charles Conrad (GT-5), James Lovell, Frank Borman (GT-7), Tom Stafford, Wally Schirra (GT-6), Neil Armstrong, Dave Scott (GT-8), Gene Cernan, Tom Stafford (GT-9A), John Young, Michael Collins (GT-10), Charles Conrad, R. F. Gordon, Jr. (GT-11), James Lovell, Buzz Aldrin (GT-12), and John Glenn (on a personal note).
An interesting lot that provides a window behind the scenes to the Gemini Program. Viewing strongly recommended as the scrapbooks are impressive and refreshingly personal. Clearly shared and referenced over the years, know the spines were secured by black and brown duct tape some time ago and some of the contents have become loose, but very much a look back on a legendary career. These scrapbooks originally sold at Goldberg Auction in 2011 for $5500. Estimate Value $1,200 - UP
The Paul Haney Estate collection, Public Affairs Officer NASA.
