Martin, Glenn - Three Signed Items and a Carried Cover (1886-1955) American aviation pioneer. He designed and built his own aircraft and founded a company in 1912 which became the Lockheed Martin company. Group of five items includes two First Day Covers signed "Glenn L. Martin" one in 1930, also signed by four others, and one in 1947. A third cover was "Carried by…Martin on Clipper Ship from Avalon to Newport, Calif." The cachet commemorates the 25th anniversary of Martin's record-breaking, 68-mile flight from Newport Bay, California to Avalon on Catalina Island, then back across the channel. A typed letter signed "Glenn L. Martin," on The Glenn L. Martin Company letterhead, Baltimore, Sept. 11, 1939, thanks Mr. Sig Levy in Fresno for his interest, etc. and refers to World War II, which was set in motion by Germany's invasion of Poland ten days earlier. In part: "My trip on the West Coast was cut short by Germany's entering the war and I am now again back at work, as there are many accelerated plans for aircraft…." Martin's company designed bombers for both world wars. Also included is a copy of a famous photo of Martin in his biplane, with a stack of newspapers on the wing. Estimate Value $300 - 500
