Lot 444

Egyptian Ptolemaic Period (323-31 B.C.) Fragment of a Cedar Wood Sarcophagus. Bottom portion of a cedar wood sarcophagus with polychrome surface decoration in gesso, all of which served to secure for the deceased access to the afterlife and perpetual sustenance. Over the feet of the deceased, a remnant of the top of the upper portion of the coffin preserves the bottom of a central hieroglyphic panel flanked by facing depictions of the jackal-headed god of mummification, Anubis. The rectangular footboard, which represents the bulk of this piece, bears a central representation of a funerary barque carrying Horus bookended by a pair of ankhs, each of which is flanked by was scepters. Dowels at the center and right face of the piece remain in place and intact. Despite some chipping to the painted gesso on the surface, this testament to the paramount importance of iconography in the funerary sphere of remains in fine condition. Displayed on a handsome black and lucite stand. Size: 20 x 9". Estimate Value $5,000 - 7,000
Out of country of origin (Egypt) prior to 1972. Shipping and U.S. Department of Customs clearance documents available upon request.
