Lot 441

Egyptian Late Period (664-332 B.C.) Funerary Mask. Oversized wooden mask of a woman carved in relief with polychrome details painted in gesso. Heavy black wig, characteristically feminine ivory skin, black eyebrows, oversized eyes outlined as though in kohl, with outer canthus dramatically extended nearly to the ears, and smallish mouth, lips upturned at corners and painted red. Perforations -- three in the upper portion of the wig and one in the right hand lappet of the wig, for dowels, only two of which remain in place. In very good condition, with some loss at the left and right, but still a remarkable example of late Egyptian funerary art. Mounted on a handsome black stand for display. Height: 12 ½"; Width: 12". Estimate Value $1,000 - 1,500
Out of country of origin (Egypt) prior to 1972. Shipping and U.S. Department of Customs clearance documents available upon request.
