Einstein, Albert - Excellent TLS, Einstein Stands Up For An Immigrant Friend in 1938 (1879-1955) German-born American physicist; famous for developing the theory of relativity; winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics (1921). Typed letter signed "A. Einstein" as professor at The Institute for Advanced Study School of Mathematics at Princeton, one page, on Institute letterhead, in German, 10 x 8", Princeton, New Jersey, Aug. 9, 1938. To the American Consul, Manila, Philippines. The English translation reads: "Most Honorable Consul: To my great delight I learned today that the Affidavit for Mr. Max L. Berges is now available. Mr. Berges not only is a gifted artist, but has also proven to be a very good provider for himself and his family under the most difficult circumstances during his years as an immigrant. I personally consider an exceptionally worthy individual to be granted an immigration visa to the United States and would be very happy seeing his wanderings finally come to an end."

Some wrinkling and several folds; stapler mark, small rust mark and minor soiling in upper left corner. Signature is nice and bold. Accompanied by an English translation. In early 1939, Max Berges published a book, Cold Pogrom which presaged what Nazi Germany would mean for Germany's Jews and society as a whole. Estimate Value $5,000 - 7,500
