James I - Rare Document Signed As King by this Historic Monarch (1566-1625) King of Scotland as James VI from 1567 and of Great Britain as James I from 1603. During his reign, he authorized an English translation of the Bible for the Church of England, known as the Authorised King James Version, which was completed in 1611. British colonization of the Americas began during his reign with the settlement at Jamestown in 1607 and the "Golden Age" of Elizabethan literature and drama continued to flourish. Manuscript document signed "James R", one page with integral address leaf, 11¼ x 7¼", Theobalds House, July 24, 1622. To Duncan Campbell, Laird of Glenorchy (Argyllshire, Scotland). In part: "…We have understood as well by your letter to our servant Sir Patrick Murray as by the report of our servant Scandemonde your careful and earnest endeavor for…your special care and good entertainent of Scandemonde himself what it hath given him occasion to speak…of you in particular of people dutifully fully devoted to your prince and well affected to strangers So give you much hardy thanks for the same. We have also by your letter to Sir Patrick Murray understood your honest offer for bringing of deer into Glaumonde…we very well esteem thereof and therefore desire you to go on assuring you that thereby you shall do that very acceptable service whereof when occasion shall be offered we will not be unmindful…." Most of large paper and wax seal on address leaf is intact; the leaf is tipped into a slightly larger sheet. Light overall toning.
