Liszt, Franz - Inscribed and Signed Transcriptions From Wagner's Works (1811-1886) Hungarian composer and pianist. "Aus Richard Wagner's Opera / Transcriptionen für das Pianoforte von Franz Liszt" (Leipzig, Breitkopf & Härtel), 78 pages, inscribed and signed on the title page: "Madame Tony Raab / très affectueusement / F Liszt / Fevrier 76 - Pest" Pages are worn and toned, with numerous marginal tears, paper loss at corners, and tape repairs. Lower portion of pp 19/20 missing (from "Elsa's Brautgang zum Münster"). Transcriptions included are from "Tannhäuser," "Lohengrin," "Rienzi," "Der fliegende Holländer," and "Tristan und Jsolde." Protected by paper wrappers. Condition is good.

Liszt wrote transcriptions for piano of a wide variety of music and played many of them himself. Antonia Raab was a Hungarian pianist who was a pupil of Franz Liszt; they performed together in 1881. In March 1883, Liszt composed a nocturne based on a poem by Raab: "Schlaflos! Frage und Antwort-- Nocturne nach einem Gedicht von A Raab" ["Sleepless! Question and Answer--Nocturne from the poem by A Raab"]. Raab married a member of Emperor Franz Josef's palace guard. Estimate Value $800 - 1,000
