McAuliffe, Anthony C. - Photo Signed by the General Who Said "Nuts" to the Germans (1898-1975) Photo signed "A C McAuliffe, Maj. Gen, U S Army," 10 x 8", 10 x 8", no place, no date. A chest-up portrait in uniform. Back is stamped "Please Credit U.S. Army Photograph…" Fine. General McAuliffe was acting commander of the U.S. 101st Airborne Division troops defending Bastogne, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge when the commander of the much-larger German force demanded their surrender. The Germans received the following reply: "To the German Commander. NUTS! The American Commander." For his actions at Bastogne, McAuliffe was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross by General Patton. Estimate Value $250 - 300
