Elizabeth B. Phelps and Marion Dickerman - Suffragettes. Elizatbeth B. Phelps - Nine checks filled out to herself, signed, and endorsed by E.B. Phelps, all on The People's Bank, East Orange, N.J., written between 1898 and 1900 for various amounts. Each check has a red, 2¢ revenue stamp. Elizabeth B. Phelps was a wealthy, early suffragette who was on the Executive Committee for National Woman Suffrage. She gave a birthday party for Susan B. Anthony's 59th birthday in 1870 and was a benefactor to Anthoy's newspaper, The Revolution. Phelps opened the Woman's Bureau in New York City to house artists, studios and offices for women's organizations and to provide accommodations for women who were visiting the city. Anthony moved the office of her newspaper there in 1869 and that same year, the National Woman Suffrage Association was established there. Condition is very good to fine.
Marion Dickerman (1890-1983) Suffragette and educator and longtime friend of Eleanor Roosevelt; they worked together for the Women's Trade Union League, The League of Women Voters, and the Democratic National Committee. Business card engraved "Mrs. Franklin Delano Roosevelt / Forty-nine East Sixty-fifth Street," with a holiday greeting by Dickerman just above Eleanor Roosevelt's name, "A very merry Christmas to you! Marian Dickerman and," making it a joint holiday greeting to an unknown person. Minor soiling and a thin rust line at right edge. After FDR was elected President in 1932, the Roosevelts spent little time in the house on 65th St. (Eleanor preferred an apartment on E. 11th St.), and in October 1934, the townhouse on E. 65th was put up for rent.
