Castro, Fidel - Document Signed as Prime Minister of Cuba, 1959 (1926-2016) Cuban revolutionary who overthrew the Batista regime in 1959 and assumed power as Prime Minister (1959-76) and as President from 1976 to 2008. Typed document signed "Fidel Castro" as Prime Ministro, one page, 13½ x 8¾", in the Palace of the President, Mar. 6, 1959, "Year of Liberation". Document issued in the name of Doctor Manuel Urrutia y Lleó, President of the Republic of Cuba (Castro would denounce him as a traitor four months later and dismiss him), and approved by the Council of Ministers and Castro, regarding abolitioning privileges that were created with the sole purpose of easing the impunity of crimes, torture, and other acts of violence perpetrated and carried out to stifle heroic revolutionary action. Countersigned by the minister of justice. The blue paper seal of the President of the Republic of Cuba, featuring the Cuban coat of arms, appears intact at lower right; embossed seals of the prime minister and the minister of justice are with their signatures.
