Lot 60

1822 N-7 R3+ PCGS graded AU58. Glossy medium chocolate brown and olive steel with lighter brown toning inside the wreath. The sharpness of this cent is very close to mint state but it was cleaned long ago and it has retoned naturally over the decades. There are spots of shallow crud in protected areas around the date and lower stars, but it takes a glass to see them. The best identifying marks are a spot of darker reddish brown toning on the right side of the O in ONE and a thin diagonal planchet void over the C in CENT (as struck). Sharply struck EDS. The fields on the obverse are hard and slightly reflective and the leaf under the C in AMERICA is strong for this die marriage. Graded MS60 net EF45 and tied for CC#2 in the Bland census. Noyes says AU50 net VF35 and tied for CC#3, his photo #35113. Our grade is net EF45. Comes with a nice provenance. The DuPont-Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 62 for the variety. PCGS #36730. Estimate Value $2,500 - UP
