Lot 349

1842 N-2 R1 Small Date PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Frosty bluish steel and chocolate brown. The luster is a bit subdued by a layer of natural oxidation, and this cent looks like it has never been brushed or rubbed. The surfaces are nearly flawless. The best identifying marks are small spot of slightly darker toning in the field just touching the lower right edge of the outer hair bun and a diagonal nick-like planchet chip midway between star 1 and the middle of the neck. LDS (but not quite the latest), die state d. The die defects below the date are gone and there is a very fine die crack from the bottom of the C in CENT to the leaf below. The other die crack through the left side of the wreath fades away before it reaches the tip of the ribbon. A very nice cent. Our grade is MS60+ (perhaps better if the underlying mint luster were uncovered), tied for CC#11 in the Grellman census. The attribution and Heard provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 6; 1 finer in 65+ for the variety. PCGS #405815. Estimate Value $1,000 - UP
Ex Bowers & Merena 3/22/2007-Gene Heard Collection.
