1819 N-3 R3- Close Stars PCGS graded MS63 Brown. The obverse is lustrous light to medium olive and bluish steel with traces of very faded red in protected areas while the reverse is mint red mellowing to bluish steel brown with more than half the red remaining visible. The surfaces are covered with satiny mint frost and the only notable marks are two small spots of darker toning (not carbon) in the field before the nose. The reverse is an unqualified gem in every respect. MDS with a fine die crack from the bust tip toward the right point of star 1. The repunching on the right top of the N in UNITED is still visible. Graded MS64 and CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes photo #27845. Our grade is MS63, same as the PCGS grade. Arguably this is the finest "Close Stars" 1819 cent known of either die variety (N-3 & N-4 share this obverse die). The attribution and Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; tied for finest of the variety at both services. PCGS #36634. Estimate Value $5,000 - UP
