Lot 339

1838 N-4 R2 PCGS graded MS66 Brown. Choice lustrous bluish steel brown and light olive with 10% of both sides showing faded mint color. Nearly flawless except for a nearly vertical line of 5 tiny ticks in the field below star 5. Nicely struck E-MDS with a fine die crack from the dentils to the left point of star 9, and the crack weakens as it reaches the top of the inner hair bun where it disappears. The cracks at the date have not formed and there are no rim cuds on the obverse. A beautiful, frosty cent that offers great eye appeal (hence the lofty rating by PCGS). Our grade is MS63. Comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and Helfenstein-Heard provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 1 finer in 67 for the variety. PCGS #37189. Estimate Value $1,500 - UP
Ex Thomas L. Elder 1935-Milton A. Holmes, Stack's 10/5/1960:1586-Louis Helfenstein, Lester Merkin 8/14/1964:176 (where plated)-unknown-Tom Reynolds 8/4/2005-Gene Heard Collection.
