Lot 327

1833 N-4 R4 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Choice lustrous olive and steel with 20% of the obverse and 10% of the reverse showing mint color. Sharply struck and very attractive. The best identifying marks, and they are insignificant, are a pair of diagonal ticks on the truncation over the 18 and a small spot of darker bluish olive toning under the E in UNITED. E-MDS with a fine die crack through the date and lower stars but without the additional crack from star 4 to star 7. This variety is sometimes called a 3/2 overdate, and in the earliest state you can see some fine repunching of either a 2 or another 3 under the second 3. There is a trace of something at the right bottom of the 3 on this example, but calling it the base of an undertype 2 would be a stretch. Our grade is MS63. The attribution and Matthews-Heard provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; tied for finest RB of the variety at both services. PCGS #37028. Estimate Value $4,000 - UP
Ex Robert E. Matthews, Superior 5/28/1989:739-Tom Reynolds, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 5/2003:791-Tom Reynolds-Gene Heard Collection (includes the Matthews lot ticket).
