Lot 315

1826/5 N-8 R2 Overdate 6 over 5 PCGS graded AU55. Choice glossy medium chocolate brown with frosty lighter brown and tan in the protected areas on the reverse. A very attractive cent, just lightly worn. The only notable marks are a dull diagonal nick or planchet chip under star 7, another in the center of the neck, and a small puff of lighter brown toning resting against the hair under star 8. Nicely struck E-MDS with a strong die clashmark at the throat. The dentils around both sides are well defined and there is no crumbling inside the top of the N in ONE. Segments of the inner circle on the obverse are present and the top of the 5 is visible under the top of the 6. This earlier die state is preferable because it shows the overdate feature more clearly than later examples struck from worn dies. Our grade is EF45+. The attribution and Heard provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 7 finer for the variety. PCGS #36835. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP
Ex Heritage Auctions 8/2006:182-Gene Heard Collection (lot ticket included).
