Great Britain. Bank of England Dollar, 1804. S.3768; Dav-101; KM-Tn1Obverse, laureate draped bust right by Conrad H Kuchler. GEORGIUS III DEI GRATIA REX. Top laurel leaf to center of E in DEI. Reverse, Britannia seated facing left on rock holding trident and olive branch. BANK OF ENGLAND 1804. Struck en medaille with plain edge. Designer's initial, K, inverted and incuse below shield. A very rare variety, especially in the highest grades. Exquisite gold and purple toning, virtually as struck, and prooflike. Lots of eye appeal and a high catalogue price (£1000/$1250+ in XF, unpriced in higher grades). NGC graded AU-58. WINGS. Estimate Value $1,200 - 1,400
*This has been struck over a Spanish 8 Reales of Charles IV. The obverse lettering of the original coin is evident above and behind the legend on this piece. The date of the original 8 Reales (1790) is clearly visible on the reverse. The Bank of England Dollar was current for 5 Shillings from 1804 until 1811 when it was revalued at 5 Shillings and sixpence. It was withdrawn from circulation in 1817.
