1801 S-219 R2 3-Error Reverse PCGS graded VF30. Glossy chocolate brown and steel with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints and frosty light brown in protected areas, especially on the obverse. The surfaces are smooth and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. Just a few trivial contact marks, including a small diagonal nick at the right bottom of the second S in STATES. Nicely struck except for some weakness hidden in the drapery over the 0 in the date, apparently the result of a pre-striking depression in the planchet. MDS, Breen state IV, with a single die crack that arcs from the denominator through UNI to the dentils over the left edge of the adjacent T. The date and legends are all strong, the repunching on the right half of the M in AMERICA is clear, and all 3 of the die-cutter errors are obvious (000 denominator, missing left stem, and U over inverted U in UNITED). A very nice example of this popular "Redbook" variety. Our grade is VF25. The attribution and Heard provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2 in VF; 3 finer for the variety. PCGS #36272. Estimate Value $4,000 - UP
Ex Heritage 4/27/2011:4053-Gene Heard Collection (lot ticket included).
