Lot 239

1794 S-48 R5 Starred Reverse PCGS graded F12. Olive brown and steel with lighter chocolate brown toning on the devices. The surfaces are decent but faint microscopic roughness covers the fields and protected areas while the highpoints are nearly smooth. The only notable trace of verdigris is a speck of light green crud (perhaps easily removable) on the bottom of the D in UNITED. The notable marks are a light rim bruise left of the bottom of the cap and a diagonal nick on the left side of the O in ONE. MDS, Breen state II late or III early, with a faint bulge or "buckle" on the reverse from ON in ONE to the rim at RI in AMERICA. The vast majority of the tiny stars nestled among the dentils on the reverse are still visible. The only stars that are not visible are the ones over AMERIC, and much of that is due to the buckle that affects that side of the reverse. This is a relatively new discovery of the variety, and it appears it has never been brushed or "conserved" in any way. An important example of this highly coveted variety. Graded VG10 sharpness net VG7 and tied for CC#13 in the Noyes census, his photo #59883. Our grade is net VG8. The attribution and Heard provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer for the variety, 2 in VF, 1 in 50. PCGS #35705. Estimate Value $20,000 - UP
Ex Heritage 9/13/2006:142 (as a new discovery of the variety)-unknown-Heritage 1/4/2012:3033-Gene Heard Collection.
