Lot 192

1839 N-9 R2 Silly Head, Counterstamped for Chile, PCGS Genuine, XF Details, Damage. Sharpness EF40 but light to moderate pitting covers about half of both sides. No marks or verdigris, and the toning is an attractive and slightly glossy medium chocolate brown. What makes this cent special is the extremely rare government validation stamp strongly and evenly applied in the center of the obverse. It is a beaded 8mm circle with three volcanic mountains and VALP below. The stamp is for the city of Valparaiso, Chile. Various foreign coins were similarly validated by this city as well as Valdivia and Serena, and most were coins from other South American countries. This is the only US Large Cent we have seen with this validation stamp. Our grade is net F15 for the cent and EF40 for the stamp. An important piece for the serious specialist. Estimate Value $1,000 - UP
Ex Long Island Numismatics 6/1995-Manuel Ahumada Collection.
