Lot 174

1838 N-2 R1 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown. Lustrous bright mint red starting to mellow to steel brown on the highpoints with two-thirds of the obverse and at least three-fourths of the reverse showing original mint color. Has the eye appeal of a gem cent but there are a couple marks, including a spot of fine carbon over the C in CENT and a shallow planchet flake under the first S in STATES (as struck). LDS. The partial inner circle at the dentil tips from the date to star 1 and from star 5 to star 8 is gone but the doubled center dot on the reverse remains clear. Graded MS65 and finest known in the Noyes census, his photo #27285. Bland says MS65 and tied for CC#1 in his census. Our grade is MS64+, close to MS65. This is the plate coin for the variety in the Noyes book on the cents of 1816-1839. Removed from an NGC slab graded MS65RB (NGC label #218596-007). Comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and Naftzger-Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer in 65 for the variety. PCGS #37184. Estimate Value $1,500 - UP
