Lot 167

1837 N-12 R3 Beaded Hair Cord PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Lustrous mint red fading to steel and light chocolate brown with at least a third of the mint color remaining on the obverse and 75% on the reverse. A gem cent if not for a few spots of darker toning. The notable ones are a spot at the dentil tips over star 11 and another on the bottom of the T in CENT. MDS. Traces of the fine repunching on the lower left part of the 8 remain visible, the right side of the curl over the 7 is very weak due to die polishing, and there are no rim cuds. Major portions of the "Accessory E" punched into the leaves below the normal E in AMERICA are clearly visible. A great example of this popular variety. Graded MS65 and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #28382. Graded MS65 by Del Bland and CC#3 in his census. This cent was graded MS70 by Ted Naftzger when he owned it (a good example of the "ownership is worth 5 points" effect). Our grade is MS64. The attribution and Naftzger-Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer, 1 in 64+, 2 in 65 for the variety. PCGS #37142. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP
