Lot 161

1837 N-5 R2 Plain Hair Cord, Small Letters PCGS graded MS64 Brown, CAC Approved. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with 5% of the obverse and 25% of the reverse showing mint red. Satiny mint frost covers the fields and protected areas on both sides and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. No spots or stains, just a few small nicks. The notable ones are two on the jaw line, a couple more on the bust tip, and a nick on the rim just right of the date. Nicely struck E-MDS. The die cracks on both sides are light and the fine die line under IT in UNITED is visible. A very nice example of the Plain Hair Cord with Small Letters type. Graded MS63 and CC#2 in the Bland census. Our grade is MS60+. Plated in the John Wright book on the cents of 1816-1839 to illustrate the variety. Comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and Brown-Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; 4 finer, 2 in 65, 1 in 65+, 1 in 66 for the variety. PCGS #37144. Estimate Value $1,500 - UP
