Lot 158

1837 N-2 R2 Plain Hair Cord, Medium Letters PCGS graded MS64 Brown, CAC Approved. Glossy light chocolate brown with a few tiny peeps of very faded mint color visible on both sides. Frosty luster shows in the fields and protected areas and this cent offers very nice eye appeal. No spots or stains, and the only notable mark is a dull, barely visible tick on the end of the chin. M-LDS with a second die crack down from star 3 making a slightly raised internal cud in addition to the earlier cracks and cuds on the left side of the obverse. Graded MS60 and tied for CC#3 in the Bland census. Noyes says AU50 and tied for CC#5, his photo #25793. Our grade is MS60. This is the plate coin for the variety in Howard Newcomb's book on the cents of 1816-1857 (Plates VIII & IX). Comes with a nice provenance. Previously removed from an NGC slab graded MS65BN (NGC label #380716-001). The attribution and Newcomb-Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 4; tied for finest BN of the variety. PCGS #37150. Estimate Value $1,500 - UP
