Lot 32

1800/798 S-190 R3 Overdate 800 over 798 PCGS graded MS62 Brown. Variety with Style I Hair. Choice lustrous dark steel brown and chocolate. Satiny mint frost covers this cent and the eye appeal is outstanding. No spots, stains, or corrosion. The only marks, and it takes a strong glass to see them, are some faint hairlines in the field behind the portrait and a few more near the dentils over the bust tip. MDS, Breen state II, with fine die rust and clashmarks visible on both sides. The 7 under the 8 is bold while the undertype 98 is dull and weak (as always on this variety due to die wear in earlier marriages), but it is still visible. This is the plate coin for the variety in Dr. Sheldon's Early American Cents and Penny Whimsy, and it is far superior to the Breen plate coin. Our grade is AU58 Choice, just a hint of rub on the highest points from mint state. Noyes says AU55 Choice and CC#2 behind only the ANS example (with only 3 graded better than VF35 in his census). Bland says AU55 and CC#3 in the Breen/Bland census. A great cent that comes with an equally great provenance. The attribution and Koshkarian provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; the only MS BN example graded at both services. Estimate Value $22,000 - UP
Ex C. David Pierce 1945-Sheraton Coin Co. (Ernest Henderson) 1945-Dr. William H. Sheldon 4/19/1972-R. E. Naftzger, Jr.-Herman Halpern, Stack's 3/16/1988:174 (as MS60+)-Doug Bird 1/2005 (includes the Bird collection envelope and Halpern lot ticket).
