Lot 234

1814 S-295 R1 Plain 4 PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Frosty olive brown with hints of bluish steel overtone and traces of underlying very faded red in protected areas on the reverse. The only mark on otherwise flawless surfaces is a small, inconspicuous spot of shallow reddish carbon under the left foot of the N in UNITED. Nicely struck E-MDS, Breen state III. There are strong die clashmarks that have created what is sometimes called a double profile from the brow to the tip of the nose. A fine die crack reaches from the bust tip to the dentils under star 1, but the crack from star 11 to the lowest curl has not formed. Fine raised polishing lines from a fresh die lapping show in the field before the portrait. A sharp, beautiful cent. Perfect for a high-grade type set. Graded MS60 and tied for CC#6 in the Noyes census, his photo #20056. Our grade is MS60 as well. The attribution and Naftzger-Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 4; 3 finer at PCGS for the variety. Estimate Value $15,000 - UP
Ex B. Max Mehl-T. James Clarke-R. E. Naftzger, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 9/14/2008:205.
