Lot 228

1810 S-282 R2 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Lustrous medium steel brown with faint specks of darker steel brown toning scattered over the obverse. No roughness or verdigris, only a few light contact marks. The notable marks are a few nicks around star 2 and a tiny planchet chip nestled between the lower left points of star 3. E-MDS, Breen state II, with faint die cracks connecting stars 2-4 and 10-11. Very shallow low spots cover much of the neck with similar low spots around the E in ONE and T in CENT (all caused by debris or lubricating grease on the dies). Graded MS63 and CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 net AU55 and tied for CC#3, his photo #35858. Our grade is AU58+, very close to mint state. The reverse of this cent is plated in Penny Whimsy. A very nice cent that comes with an impressive provenance. The attribution and Naftzger-Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 1; 1 finer in 64 at PCGS for the variety. Estimate Value $10,000 - UP
Ex David Proskey-Henry C. Hines-Dr. William H. Sheldon 4/19/1972-R. E Naftzger, Jr., 1/20/1977-Douglas M. McHenry, Superior 9/30/1986:417-Martin Paul (The Rarities Group)-Gene Sherman 6/1997.
