1808 S-277 R2 PCGS graded MS64 Brown, CAC Approved. Highly lustrous light bluish steel brown and chocolate with hints of underlying faded mint red showing through in protected areas on both sides. Satiny mint frost covers the entire planchet, even the highest points of the devices, and this cent offers exceptional eye appeal. No spot or stains, nearly flawless. The best identifying marks are a microscopic pinprick on the bottom of the first 8 in the date and a tiny scratch on the left top of the first T in STATES. LDS, Breen state VIII. There is a small internal cud break inside the D in UNITED and a narrow rim cud break over that N. The die failure at D STATES is well advanced and star #1 is now faint (the so-called 12-Star die state). A beautiful Classic Head cent. Graded MS63 and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #20278. Bland says MS65 and CC#1. Our grade is MS64. The attribution and Naftzger-Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 1; 1 finer in 66 at PCGS for the variety.
