Lot 225

1805 S-267 R1 PCGS graded MS65 Brown, CAC Approved. Lustrous medium chocolate and light olive with a hint of bluish steel overtone. A few faint peeps of very faded mint color can be found if you use a strong glass and are willing to search for them. Mint frost covers this cent, even the highpoints, and the eye appeal is outstanding in every respect. About as close to flawless as I have seen for an early large cent. The best identifying mark, and you will have to work to see it, is a very light, dull rim nick over the second T in STATES. M-LDS, Breen state III, with dull die clashmarks on both sides and a dull die crack through the top of AME. Graded MS62 Choice and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #33701. Bland says MS61 and tied for CC#2. Our grade is MS64. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 1; none finer at PCGS for the variety. Estimate Value $15,000 - UP
Ex Mayflower Coin Co., 1957-Gene Reale, Sotheby's (New York) 1/1998:41-Denis Loring-John MacDonald (via Denis Loring) 8/1999-Wes Rasmussen, Heritage 1/13/2005:3324-Tom Reynolds Collection (includes the Rasmussen collection envelope).
