Lot 223

1803 NC-1 R5+ PCGS Genuine, XF Details, Environmental Damage. Dark steel and olive brown. The surfaces are dull thanks to uniform extremely fine granularity. No verdigris, and the only notable marks are a faint hairline scratch from the cheek down to the neck where it fades away and a dull vertical nick on the jaw. Nicely struck MDS, Breen state II, with a die crack through the top of NITE to the rim over the adjacent D. Our grade is VF25 sharpness net F12. Perhaps a proper brushing would bring some life back to the surfaces and improve the eye appeal (and net grade). This is a relatively new discovery and it has not been evaluated by Noyes or Bland. The finest example outside the ANS collection is a burnished piece graded VF30 net F15 in the Noyes census and VF30 net VF20 by Bland. In fact all the top pieces except for the ANS example have significant surface problems, so waiting for a really nice one may be an exercise in futility. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP
