Lot 214

1803 S-254 R1 PCGS graded VF35. Glossy medium olive brown and chocolate. Smooth and quite attractive showing light even wear and minor contact marks. A pinprick nick hidden in the curl on the neck is the best identifying mark. MDS, Breen state III late, with a strong die crack through the bust tip to the dentils at both ends. This cent displays a spectacular full obverse brockage, the incuse side rotated about 55-60 degrees clockwise relative to the normal side. Obviously this cent was struck with the obverse die on one side and against the obverse of a previously struck cent that had rotated but failed to eject from the coining chamber. One of the finest examples of this type of error we have seen. Noyes photo #36823. This cent is mentioned in the Remarks section for the S-254 variety in the Breen encyclopedia. Our grade is VF30. The attribution, Full Rev Brockage, and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Estimate Value $4,000 - UP
Ex Mike O'Hara 2/1979-unknown-Stuart Levine 1/1998-Tom Reynolds Collection (includes the collection envelope of the unspecified 1979 purchaser).

Realized $11,456
