Lot 182

1798 S-174 R2 Style II Hair, Small 8 PCGS graded AU58. Beautiful glossy chocolate and olive brown with lighter steel brown toning in protected areas on the reverse. Underlying frosty mint luster covers the fields and protected areas and this cent offers outstanding eye appeal. Essentially a flawless cent with just a touch of friction on the highest points of the devices. A dull tick on the tip of the chin and a light diagonal scratch left of the first S in STATES are good identifying marks. MDS, Breen state III early. Both dies show clashmarks but the dull lump (Breen calls this a "chip") right of the F in OF is not present. Noyes graded AU50 net EF45 and CC#5. Bland says AU50 and tied for CC#4. Our grade is AU50+. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 2; 2 finer at PCGS for the variety, 1 in 63, 1 in 64. Estimate Value $4,000 - UP
