Lot 179

1798 S-173 R3 Style II Hair, Small 8 PCGS graded AU55, CAC Approved. Rotated Reverse. Frosty light to medium chocolate brown delicately mottled with darker olive brown tones on the obverse. Satiny mint luster shows in the protected areas on both sides and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. No roughness or verdigris. There are some tiny contact marks on the face and under the earlobe with more tiny ticks inside the wreath. None of these marks is visible without the aid of a good glass, but there are too many to ignore at this sharpness level. A tiny planchet flake at the left top of the first S in STATES is a good identifying mark. Nicely struck M-LDS, Breen state VII. There is a cud break over ERTY that involves the tops of the RTY but not the E, and this cud extends to the over the left edge of that E. A fine die crack is visible through the top of LI and it reaches the dentils to the left of the L. The reverse is rotated 60 degrees CCW. Graded AU55 net EF45 and tied for CC#6 in the Noyes census (but finest of the die state), his photo #27830. Our grade is AU50+ sharpness net EF45. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 2; 4 finer at PCGS for the variety, 1 in 61, 2 in 62, 1 in 63. Estimate Value $4,000 - UP
Ex Gale Venable 5/1982.
