Lot 169

1798 S-164 R4 Style I Hair, Small 8 PCGS Genuine, AU Details, Cleaning. Glossy medium to dark chocolate brown and steel. No corrosion or verdigris except for a small carbon spot near the dentils over the right top of the T in UNITED. There is a dull rim nick or tiny rim bruise at the Y in LIBERTY, another barely visible one left of the hair ribbon, plus a few small nicks inside the wreath, none notable. MDS, Breen state III late. There are bulges at the date and in the obverse fields, and the field before the portrait is covered with significant die roughness but no clashmarks. A shallow low spot (caused by crud on the die) weakens some of the designs inside the wreath and the A in STATES is weakly impressed. Everything else is sharp. Called VF35 net F15 and tied for CC#15 in the Noyes census, his photo #28839. Our grade is VF30. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Estimate Value $1,000 - UP
Ex Superior 5/27/1991:32-Doug Bird 6/1991 (lot ticket included).
