Lot 157

1797 S-138 R1 PCGS graded AU50. Double Struck. Frosty dark olive and grayish steel. The surfaces are slightly dull thanks to extremely faint uniform granularity. No verdigris, and the only marks are some microscopic hairline scratches across the date, and all of them blend perfectly into the natural toning. LDS, Breen state VIII, with all the die cracks mentioned by Breen and obvious swelling at ES-OF-AM. This cent was struck two times with a short of 1-2 dentils between impressions with a pivot point near the top of the obverse. The doubling is clearest on the lower part of the obverse, especially on the date, and on upper part of the reverse, but evidence of the double strike is visible most everywhere. Our grade is EF45 sharpness net VF35. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 2; 3 finer at PCGS for the variety, 1 in 58, 1 in 58+, 1 in 64. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP
Ex at unrecorded source at the FUN Show bourse 1/2012.
