1794 S-48 R5 Starred Reverse PCGS graded G4, CAC Approved. The devices are a rather glossy light to medium brown while the protected areas are a darker shade of reddish chocolate. Extremely fine granularity covers the fields and protected areas on both sides. No verdigris, and the only marks are a few very faint hairline scratches on the reverse, none visible without a glass. The obverse is several points sharper than the reverse, which is normal for this variety, and a split grade of 6+/2 would be more descriptive than a single numerical grade in our opinion. The date is complete and easily readable, and about half the tiny stars are visible (although many are faint or muddled into the dentils). MDS with the usual swelling or buckling on the reverse that causes that side to wear more quickly than the obverse. Our net grade is AG3+, close to G4. Bland says VG7 obverse and Fair-2 reverse with an overall grade of G4. Noyes says VG8 net G5 and tied for CC#25. Obviously these Starred Reverse cents are a challenge to grade due to the disparity in sharpness between the two sides. But the pool of pieces that have received PCGS grades (rather than "Genuine" ratings) is relatively small, and not many of the graded pieces have received CAC Approval. So this cent has a lot going for it. The attribution and Koshkarian provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $16,000 - UP
