During the Russo-Persian War of 1722-1723, Peter the Great’s armies captured portions of Iran’s northwest territories, including parts of Daghestan, Azerbaijan and Baku. The Ottoman Turks, meanwhile, invaded the Safavid Empire and seized other chunks of Iran’s northwestern realm. This included eastern Georgia and Tbilisi (Tiflis), which they occupied from 1723-1735.
