Pre-Civil War Era, Ames Officer's Gilt Brass Presentation Sword, Sheet Silver Grip. Beautiful officer's sword with a sheet silver grip, a knights helmet pommel with a heavily chased and heavy gilt on both the guard and scabbard. The guard is cast with an American eagle, arms, liberty cap and foliate on both sides. The eteched blade is on a frost background and has acorns, oak leaves, sun rays, American flags and small liberty cap in smooth reverse. Scabbard is engraved with a horizontal shield that reads "Presented by Company B. Jefferson Artillery to Capt. P. Ferber, Sept. 2d 1851" with flourishes throughout the text. Blade is 31¼" and overall length 37½". Blade is in overall fine condition boasting high polish. However, some minor pitting for about 8" on both sides of the blade within the floral etchings visible on close inspection. The scabbard is in excellent condition engraved on back, "Ames Mfg. Co. Chicopee Mass" and absolutely a knockout. Sword handle details also in excellent condition A fine addition to any collection. $4,000 - 6,000
