Lot 497

1807 S-271 R1 Comet Obverse Basal State-1. Double Struck, Off-Center Obverse Brockage Maker. This cent is heavily worn, lightly scratched, and shows very fine roughness in protected areas. Partly glossy dark steel brown and chocolate. Not much going for it except for the mint error. This cent was struck twice. The first strike was normal and centered on the planchet. But the struck cent failed to eject completely before another planchet was inserted into the coining chamber and the dies hit again. The second strike from the reverse die was about 75% off center to K-6.5 leaving ATES OF and the upper leaves of the wreath where the fraction and UNI had been from the first strike. The opposing area on the obverse was struck against the new blank planchet rather than the obverse die, thereby leaving an off-center incuse impression of the date area on the second planchet. The second strike also distorted the planchet slightly leaving it a bit egg-shaped. Not an especially pretty cent given the excessive wear, but the date is easily readable and the mint error is obvious to the unaided eye. Estimated Value $100-UP

Realized $94
