Lot 488

1803 S-251 R2 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Frosty light to medium brown with golden tan and very faded mint color in protected areas and darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. There are a couple subtle splashes of slightly darker brown toning on the obverse, the largest of these in the field just above the bust. The only contact marks are a fine pin scratch near the dentils left of the lowest curl and another near the dentil tips over D-ST. MDS, Breen state III. The fine die crack from the dentils right of D in UNITED passes through the wreath and fades away as it approaches the space right of the F in OF. Called MS60 and tied for CC#3 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 net AU55 and tied for CC#3, his photo #21234 (although he graded it MS60 in his 1991 census). Our grade is MS60. The reverse of this cent is plated in the Newcomb book on the cents of 1801-1803 that was published in 1925. Comes with a great provenance. The attribution and Naftzger-Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 2; 2 finer, 1 in 63+, 1 in 64. Estimated Value $8,000-UP
