Lot 467

1798 S-167 R1 Large 8, Style II Hair PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Lustrous light olive and medium steel brown with very faded mint color showing in protected areas, especially on the reverse. A beautiful cent. The only defects are a diagonal nick-like planchet chip under the B in LIBERTY, two faint spots of slightly darker reddish brown toning near the dentils left of the hair ribbon, and another similar spot at the bust tip. None of these marks is at all distracting and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. The reverse is choice in every respect. Terminal die state (TDS), Breen state VI, with numerous die cracks on the obverse, a cud break at the top of the first T in STATES, and raised die lines at various angles around UNITED. Graded MS60 net AU55 and tied for CC#3 in the Noyes census, his photo #24364. Bland says AU55 as well. Our grade is MS60. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 2; 1 finer in 64 at PCGS for the variety . Estimated Value $5,000-UP

Discovered in an old house while being torn down in New England-Jim McGuigan-Del Bland-Dr. Philip W. Ralls (who graded it MS63)-Eric Streiner, Superior 10/11/1992:98-Tom Reynolds Collection (includes the Ralls collection envelope and Superior lot ticket).
