Lot 461

1798 S-158 R4 Small 8, Style I Hair PCGS graded AU50. Double Struck. Frosty dark chocolate brown and olive mixed with some lighter reddish chocolate brown on the obverse. Smooth and attractive with only minor contact marks, none notable. This cent was struck twice. Both strikes were centered on the planchet but the second was rotated 90 degrees CCW relative to the first. Bold, obvious evidence of the first impression is visible on both sides. Two complete dates are visible on the obverse, one left of the hair ribbon and the other in the normal position under the truncation of the second strike. E-MDS, Breen state II. A spectacular mint error; worth a look even if you don't collect these little gems. Graded VF35 net VF30 and tied for CC#8 for the die variety in the Noyes census, his photo #60572. Our grade is VF30+. The attribution, Reynolds provenance, and "Double Struck" feature are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Estimated Value $2,000-UP

Ex Chris McCawley-Denis Loring 8/2/2008-Tom Reynolds Collection.
