Lot 439

1833 C-1 R1 MS60 Prooflike. Attractive light golden olive and bluish steel. No notable defects. A speck of reddish brown toning close off the tip of the nose can help identify this piece. EDS, Breen state III (which he says is a proof-only die state). A very fine die crack passes from star 2 through stars 3-7 into the field above the head where it fades away. There is no trace of a die crack from star 2 to the dentils at star 1 (Breen's state IV, which is associated with both proof and business strikes). The fields on both sides are reflective, but there is a thin layer of natural oxidation that dulls the reflectivity. Perhaps a skillful conservation will uncover a proof half cent. Removed from a PCGS slab graded MS64BN (PCGS label #35282.64/81107418 included). Estimated Value $600-UP
