Drusus, with Tiberius and Germanicus Gemellus. AE Sestertius (25.69 g), Caesar. Rome, under Tiberius, AD 22/3. Crossed cornuacopiae, each surmounted by bare-headed bust of a boy facing one another; between, winged caduceus. Reverse: DRVSVS CAESAR TI AVG F DIVI AVG N PONT TR POT II, large S C. RIC 42; BMC 95; BN 72. Splendid bold strike with two outstanding portraits. Lovely uniform dark green patina. Superb Extremely Fine.
This interesting obverse depicts the two principal heirs to the imperial throne during the reign of Tiberius. These two boys were the twin sons of Drusus, Tiberius Gemellus and Germanicus. Each became the victim of ruthless ambitions, one by the praetorian prefect Sejanus and the other by the elder cousin of Caligula soon after the death of Tiberius. Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000
