Six Pyritized Russian Ammonites. Some of the most beautiful ammonites come from a small 160 Million year old section of the Volga River in the Ulianosk area of Russia. These Kosmoceras species ammonites are so highly value because of the beauty of their fossilization. There are six 1½ x 2" ammonites naturally displayed in a 4½ x 5 x 4¼" stone block. The shells of the ammonites are an iridescent golden brown color with the interiors filled with pyrite also know as fools gold. Pyrite preservation in ammonites is very rare and only in this small section of the Volga River were conditions just right for this beautiful pyrite preservation. This aesthetic grouping is 100 % natural with no restoration.
