14K Gold Tiffany & Co. Antique Hand Mirror, Excellent Provenance. A gift from Post Cereal heiress, Marjorie Merriweather Post, to her husband Joseph E. Davies, her partner in her third and longest marriage. Davies served as the second American ambassador to the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin and wrote the popular but controversial book Mission to Moscow, which Warner Brothers turned into a film, a propaganda piece made at the behest of President Roosevelt, with Walter Huston portraying Davies. After serving as an envoy to Roosevelt during WWII, Davies continued to work as a statesman for Truman, again the rank of ambassador at the Potsdam Conference.

Davies' personal mirror is stamped "Tiffany & Co. Makers 14K Gold 21002 M" and on verso is is his monogram, "J. E. D.", with the letters individually rendered in rose, yellow and white gold respectively. An example of the finest luxury accessories by Tiffany, the mirror is in excellent condition with only minor, scattered hairline scratches and slight flecks of oxidation within the mirror. It measures 8¼ x 5" and weighs 11 gross ounces, of which the gold estimated to represet 2 ounces. Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500

From The Estate of Joseph E. Davies.
