BLACK DYNAMITE: THE STORY OF THE NEGRO IN BOXING, 1782-1938, 5 Vols. SIGNED, 1938, VERY SCARCE. Fleischer, Nat (1887-1972) Founding Editor and Publisher of "The Ring" boxing magazine founded in 1922. A celebrated writer and collector of boxing ephemera, the magazine and now on- line iteration has remained influential for 95 years and is now owned by Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Enterprises. Beginning in 1938, Fleischer published his first volume on the history of black boxers and continued with four other volumes from 1939-1947. Vol.I: "The Story of the Negro in the Prize Ring from 1782 to 1938",182 pp. Vol.II: "Jolting Joe: Story of Joe Louis" - "Homicide Hank: Drama of Henry Armstrong", 165 pp. Vol.III: "The Three Colored Aces, George Dixon, Joe Gans, and Joe Walcott" 314 pp. Vol. IV: "Fighting Furies, The Golden Age of Jack Johnson, Sam Langford and their Negro Contemporaries", 282 pp. Vol. V: "Sockers in Sepia, A Continuation of the Negro in Pugilistic Competition", 250 pp. All five volumes have been beautifully kept minor toning, and spines tight. Orange cloth with titles in black and black vignettes on upper covers with no evidence of fading. Volume has been inscribed and signed by the author, Nat Fleischer in black fountain pen ink.
