Jackie Robinson Signed First Day of Issue Centenary of Baseball Stamped Cover and Photo. Jackie Robinson (#42) became the first African American to play baseball in the major leagues in 1947 for the Brooklyn Dodgers and proved to be one of the greatest to ever play. He was awarded Rookie of the Year that same year and the National League MVP in 1949. In the course of his 10 years with the The Dodgers, he advanced the cause of civil rights for black athletes and an inspiration to millions worldwide. He has been the subject of countless articles, books, film and documentaries as recently as Ken Burns' PBS two part look at his career and activism. Offered here is a large signature of Jackie Robinson, autographed on a 1939 first day of issue commemorative cover (envelope) with the 3 cent stamp celebrating its humble beginnings. Obviously signed years later by Mr. Robinson in blue felt tip pen, nevertheless a wonderful tribute to a great sport by one of the legends who played and who also brought to play a dignity and humanity far greater than the game itself. Some age toning to envelope, and slight fade to signature but still quite bold and large. Also included is a vintage original Acme Newswire photo of Jackie Robinson, stamped on verso Acme Newspictures with tag information that reads: Jackie Robinson's answer to threatening letters which warned him against playing in the twin bill against Cincinnati was a mighty home run with two mates on base to break the opener wide open. Congratulating the Dodger star is Gil Hodges, Cal Abrams and Duke Snider. Very fine. Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500

Realized $960
